Faculty Presentation:  Cheryl Hayashi, Associate Professor of Biology, UCR "Molecular mysteries and industry applications Spider Silk".  Young and talented, Cheryl Hayashi is the recipient of the MacArthur "genius Grant" and a speaker of the 2010 TED Conference on her work in understanding the molecular structures of spider silk.  Dr. Hayashi will speak about the molecular building locks of spider silk, and by unlocking the secrets of silk design, a new generation of high-performance materials can be made by scaling up to ropes and textiles as well as miniaturizing for nano-scale applications.

Members/Collaborators Round Table:  How to better brand Riverside as a hi-tech community.  Local hi-tech companies are bringing in investment capital into the region; however, a big challenge has been that Riverside is not well known for its hi-tech despite the recent successes such as being designated as an Emerald City for its green initiatives, and was selected as one of the Top 7 Most Intelligent Communities in the world by ICF last year.  RTCF members and collaborators will work on actionable items to help brand Riverside and highlight our hi-tech community.

Members/Collaborators Round Table:  Creating 2012 educational presentation series, faculty outreach & student outreach. RTCF strives to bring external speakers that talk about the latest innovations, as well as business best practices.  These series help CEOs stay in touch with current research and help horn their skills.  The group will discuss new topics for 2012.  Faculty outreach and student outreach are also important component of RTCF mission.  The round table discussion will focus on establishing more faculty/industry interaction and student internship/career planning.

Member Presentation:  Amro Albanna, CEO, Innovation Economy Corporation; Chair, RTCF Capital Formation Working Group: "Raising Capital".  Innovation Economy Corporation uses both public and private capital markets domestically and internationally to obtain funding for their research.  Amro will give an overview of his experience raising capital in the past year.   In addition, as the chair of the RTCF capital formation working group, Amro will lead a discussion on the local investment environment for hi-tech and what can be done to further improve local investments.

Collaborator Presentation: Andy Herrity, Dean, School of Business, California Baptist Univeristy: "CBU Business Idea Competition." CBU had its first Business Idea Competition last quarter.  Andy will give a summary of the competition process, challenges and the winning business idea.  This can serve an inspiration for future student competitions in the IE region.  

Forum Goal Setting for 2012 – An open discussion on the top priorities of 2012 for our members and collaborators.

Collaborator Presentation:  Greg Lee, Economic Development Coordinator | Technology Ombudsman, City of Riverside:  Managing your health with technology and the power of organ donation.  Greg Lee will discuss his personal experience as a 2x kidney donor recipient and how he uses technology to help manage his health.  In addition, Greg will also talk about the importance of organ donation and how individuals can sign-up to become donors.

Guest Presentation: Steve Serrao, Assistant Professor, Loma Linda University: How the New Healthcare Act will Impact Businesses.  The passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) in March of 2010 was preceded by, and has resulted in much debate on its ability to reign in the bulging costs of healthcare in the United States. Costs that continue to stifle the growth and competitiveness of US business. Dr. Steve Serrao, has a background in medicine, management in addition to public health and is currently engaged in management consulting at the local, regional and state level. He will highlight aspects of PPACA that are pertinent to business, discuss short and long term implications on business and explore innovative, strategies that could be adopted at the business, local and regional level.

Collaborator Presentation:  Carolyn Hock, Assistant Dean, School of Business, UCR, InSoCal CONNECT.  Riverside has recently been designated as part of iHub which is led by CONNECT, a San Diego non-profit organization that provides a platform for regional innovation clusters to flourish.   Carolyn will give a summary of the first steering committee of the new InSoCal CONNECT.  Some topics of interests include: How can InSoCal CONNECT be modeled after San Diego CONNECT?  What funding is available? How can hi-tech companies benefit and contribute from the formation of this new organization?

Guest Presentation: Bob Eng, CEO, PCI Gases.  Bob will present how a local firm supports environmental, medical, military, and energy customers out of “thin air” with innovative air separation technology.  He will also discuss the challenges in becoming a global player in supplying oxygen and nitrogen supply systems on a limited R&D budget in a private equity situation.  Please see www.pcigases.com for background on PCI and it’s markets.

Guest Presentation:  John Thomas, Ph.D., Dean, School of Business, La Sierra University.  La Sierra business students have consistently garnered top honors in business plan competitions, most notably for winning the SIFE world Cup in 2007.  Dean Thoma’s presentation will cover the following:  (1)  overview of the School of Business and the new business building plans.  (2) Is our educational system working?  (3) Discussion on how CEO’s can help fix it.

Guest Presentation: Conley Read & Mike Kennedy, Founders, IE Startup Nights.  Conley and Mike will give an overview of IE Startup Nights -  an organization that aims to stimulate high tech entrepreneurship in the Inland Empire region of southern California by building a community of technologists, designers, founders, students, investors and advisors. Startup Nights provides a space to discuss and validate startup ideas as well as give presentations and demos of projects already in progress at its events. 

Member Presentation: Walid Najaar, Jacquard Computing.  Professor Najjar from the UCR Bourns College of Engineering will talk about his startup company Jacquard Computing, based on his ROCCC 2.0 technology, a C to HDL compilation framework. Walid will share his experience managing his start-up and the challenges of going from grant funding to seeking angel investor funding.

Guest Presentation:  Brian Kovalsky, IT Officer, County of Riverside, "County of Riverside Enterprise SOlutions for Property Taxation. Brian will talk about the implementation and extensive features of the new Integrated Property Tax System (scale of 1M parcels/$300B valuation/$3B revenue).

Member Presentation: Don Dye, CEO, Acorn Technology.  Recently Winston Chung has made multi-million dollar commitments to southern California and the Inland Empire.  UCR and local businesses have been major beneficiaries of his largesse.  Why he has done this and what he hopes to achieve are matters of great importance if the Inland Empire hopes to realize the full potential of its relationship with this new found friend.  Don will share his experience and perspective.  

Member Presentation: Keith Montgomery, TTS Consulting.  Keith will present Business Intelligence in the smart grid and remote asset space.  The collected data from this area provides a high granularity of insight into the asset, location, events, and behavior of an organization.  This enables businesses to make more informed decisions on how to allocate resources to optimally fit their needs.

Faculty Presentation:  Daniel Grissom and Philip Brisk, UCR, "Torward Programmable Droplet-based Laboratories-on-Chip". This talk will summarize recent progress at UCR toward making microfluidic laboratories-on-chip software programmable. This talk will demonstrate their new algorithms for provably deadlock-free droplet routing in their device. 

Student Outreach Discussion: The first annual Riverside student business idea competition. Initiated by the Startech Committee at UCR, the goal of this competition is to encourage and nurture the next generation of young entrepreneurs in Riverside.  The structure of the competition, important dates, and promotion on Riverside college campuses will be the main points of discussion.

Guest Presentation:  Rick Miller, Ph.D., Superintendent, Riverside Unified School District. Dr. Miller will talk about Riverside Unified School District's initiatives in science and math education.

Member/collaborator Joint Discussion:  "China - Market Opportunities & Competition."  Gordon Bourns of Bourns Inc., Dean Abbaschian of UCR Bourns School of Engineering, and Greg Lee from the CIty of Riverside share phtoos and perspectives of their recent China road trip.

Local Hi-Tech Company Presentation:  Bob Henry, CEO, IT Retail - Software Solutions for small to mid-size Grocery Supermarkets. Many of you have been to Goodwins Organic Supermarket in Riverside, but may not know that Mr. Martin Goodwin started IT Retail to better manage POS information.  CEO Bob Henry will share how IT Retail has gone global with their software.

Member Presentation:  Cynthia LeVesque, Ph.D., Citrus Research Board.  Citrus Research Board recently moved into the University Research Park.  The mission of the Citrus Research Board is to ensure, improve, and protect the economic viability of the California citrus industry by supporting activities in the areas of quality assurance, production and variety research, information disemination, and grower and public education.  The laboratory at the research park uses genetic tools to monitor citrus pest problems.
